‘The Brass Verdict’

The Brass Verdict The Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly

My review

rating: 2 of 5 stars
I’ve read, and enjoyed, many of Michael Connelly’s books.

This one never really grabbed me, I’m afraid.

I just couldn’t get into the character of Mickey Haller.

Even Connelly’s hero Harry Bosch didn’t grab me in this book.

I’m disappointed.

“Zero Summer”

Zero Summer Zero Summer by Andrew Demcak

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
I’ve said this before, I’m no poetry critic.

But I like the way Andrew strings words together.

Andrew’s poems make me laugh, and cry, and rejoice in the experience of being human and living in this crazy mixed up world.

Bravo, Andrew.

Thanks for your honesty, and for sharing your experiences with me.

“Burn Out”

Burn Out Burn Out by Marcia Muller

My review

I’ve had this book on hold from the library, and my turn finally came!

And I finished this wonderful book last night.

It’s always so satisfying to catch up on one of my favorite book characters.

McCone’s life has been tumultuous, and she tries to get away from it all.

A satisfying story!

Takeover Takeover by Lisa Black

My review

rating: 3 of 5 stars
I almost bailed on this book after the first twenty pages.

I just couldn’t get into it.

But something told me to give Takeover a few more chapters, and I’m glad that I did!

The story grabbed me at last, and I finished it last night.

Not a great book, but a pretty good thriller.

I’ve finished ‘Scarpetta’!

Scarpetta (Scarpetta Book 16) Scarpetta by Patricia Cornwell

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
I’ve read every Scarpetta book, and this one is the best in a long time!

For me, it’s all about the characters, and they’re in fine form.

A good read.

Back

5 10 2008

I’m feeling much better today.

After consuming two cups of coffee, I started my laundry and cleaning this morning, and I’m waiting for my work clothes to come out of the dryer.

I opened up the windows of my small studio for some fresh air this morning, and am just now closing them up because it’s getting cooler already.

It’s fresh enough in here!

But I’m feeling well, and very well rested (I slept 10 hours last night). I think that my immune system is a bit out of whack, due to a run of insomnia (getting older ruins sleep).

So now, I’m going to eat some lunch and finish “The Lace Reader.”

Online

8 09 2008

Thanks to my brilliant child (he’s the father of 6), I’m back on The Internet.

Wireless rocks.

I was a trifle grumpy Friday night when I couldn’t get my computer to work!

Thank goodness I spent two days with the grand kiddo’s–they’ve got three computers and a wireless system that rocks.

I had a great time, but I learned something astounding: Four growing hungry children can put away food like, well, 4 hungry children!

We had a great time, and I think that I was able to help my son through a busy time–his wife is at the Toronto Film Festival, coming home Friday.

But now I’m tired.

I’m going to snuggle into bed with my nice clean sheets and sleep the night away.

Last night, I slept with a Jack Russell terrier cuddled up to my back–my son and grand kids aren’t the only one missing my daughter-in-law.

It happens every week, right about now.

My brain feels like it’s been fried in the finest oil, and there’s one day left in my work week.

I came home tonight and cleaned, getting ready for a new (to me) chair that’s being delivered to my house this weekend.

I got an excellent sleep last night, so I should be able to stay awake until at least 10 o’clock tonight.

No blogging tomorrow night, because I’m going to my grandson’s birthday party.

The weekend, the weather, and the wee-ones

17 08 2008

It’s cooler this morning.

We don’t get many hot days here in Seattle, so when it does happen, few of us have air conditioning.

It was still 79 degrees at 11:00 p.m. last night.

I babysat last night, so my son and daughter-in-law could go out for dinner and a movie.

My grandchildren have changed a lot in the last year–they are growing up, after all, as children tend to do.

Last year, Luka still needed some help with dressing, toileting, and had to be watched pretty closely.

Now he’s running around with the rest of the crew, playing hard and enjoying being a boy.

As he told me, “I’m not a baby anymore, Bunny Beth.”

Sigh.

It’s true.

We had a good time last evening, eating Annie’s Macaroni and Cheese at 8:30 because, as Luka (5) told me, “Bunny, my tummy is starving.”

It was just too hot to eat earlier.

After eating our late dinner, we sat down and watched “Bee Movie” together until Mom and Dad came home.

Then my son, granddaughter Neve,  and grand boy Jaxon took me home.

On the way, we stopped off a grocery store so I could pick up a few groceries.

As we walked out of the air conditioned store, we all gasped, because the air was so heavy.

I thought about reaching my hand up and grabbing a piece of the heavy air, just so I could throw it away.

I walked into my apartment about 11:00 p.m. and gasped.

Stifling.

I took a tepid shower and finally got to sleep about 1:00 a.m.

About 4:30 this morning, thunder and lightning woke me up.

I slept in this morning, until about 8:30, which is good for me.

And today, I’m going to do–NOTHING–except read, listen to music, watch my Joseph Campbell Netflix vids, and eat some good food.

Oh yes, I’ll also check out some blogs today.

Have a great Sunday!

word of the day, post-surgery news, and my weekend

19 07 2008

Word of the day, from dictionary.com, is:

malinger \muh-LING-guhr\, intransitive verb:

To feign or exaggerate illness or inability in order to avoid duty or work.

Have you ever malingered? I know I have, in the past. These days I just tell my supervisor that I need a mental health day!

Here’s my personal updates:

  • I had a busy week at work, and next week is looking the same, except for Thursday, when I attend a local conference.
  • I’m tired and just a wee bit cranky because I had my stitches taken out yesterday and it hurt. I know, I’m a wuss, but I’ve learned to embrace my inner wuss.
  • Later this afternoon, I’m off to spend the weekend with my family, and will be back Sunday night.  My laptop is staying home, so I can enjoy my grandchildren. Tomorrow night, we are having a ‘welcome back’ celebration dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant. Fun!
  • Right now, I’m going to finish watching Princess Mononoke so I can send it back to Netflix.
  • I will monitor all of your blogs until I leave this afternoon, and then I will check back tomorrow night when I get home.
